Bump Progress Photos Can Be Sexy, Too
Like any other momma-to-be, I have been taking pictures here and there when I remember, to track the progress of my growing tummy. Or should I say, whenever my tummy does decide to grow beyond the addition of all of the mac and cheese and chocolate milk I've been inhaling.
I have been pouring over all sorts of belly progress photography, and being an amateur photographer myself, I knew I wanted more than a side-ways shot of me in a tight shirt, against a blank wall with a chalkboard that tells you what kind of fruit my kid is the size of now. If that's your thing - awesome! Do it! But it isn't everyone's thing, and that's okay.
I came across some gorgeous shots, all in black and white, of a gorgeous momma in all of her growing glory. She was silhouetted against a bright light - it looked like a sheer curtain over a sunny window - so that you didn't see much else other than her perfect belly, growing shot by shot.
I just HAD to give that a shot.
Thankfully, I already own a tripod, Nikon d7100, and multiple lenses. I selected the lens with the widest f-stop which happened to be my wide-angle lens. I had to toy with the settings because I was an idiot and took these pictures at the end of the day, when the sun was going down. That would be the trick, to try and take the pictures around the same time every day to get the light as similar in each picture as possible. Obviously, with photo-editing software, anything is possible and you can always fix what you didn't get quite right.
Here are a few of my favorite shots. Who says belly progress shots have to be entirely modest? I didn't make this baby with my clothes on, after all... (yes, I have a sports bra and boy shorts on in these pictures, no need to shield your eyes, folks)
I'll admit in the first shot, the placement of my hand on my tummy is a bit odd. Kind of looks like I have a pointy, alien baby growing in there. Nope, just my wrist, arched up in a weird way.

I plan on honing this technique down as time goes on - I'd like to take the pictures in a portrait orientation, zoomed in tight around my body. I think it will just be easier to compile them in the end, that way. It was so much fun taking these pictures. It's nice hiding some imperfections this way... for example, can you see my arm fat? HA, NOPE. See those zits on my face? Pregnancy has blessed me with some acne... do you see them?? NAH, YA CAN'T! I just love it.
Like I said, bump progress photos don't have to be... vanilla. They can be very, very, NOT vanilla. In a delicious, moody, dark chocolate kind of way.
